Upper State the north side of Santa Barbara begins approximately at 3300 State St. at Loreto Plaza and runs along State to Modoc Rd., at which point State becomes Hollister. Today upper State is one long retail district, the location of the City's biggest shopping mall, La Cumbre Plaza (corner of Hope Ave.), and the adjacent Five Points Shopping Center. But up until the early 1960s, upper State was basically a country road, slicing through miles of citrus groves.
